Turn Your Garage Into A Home Office With These Tips

Justin Ross

If you have extra space in your garage that isn't being used for storage, why not turn it into a functional space? You can create a nice home office in that area with just a few improvements. Here are some tips for converting your garage into a home office.

Empty Out the Garage

Obviously, if you want to have an office in your garage, you need to clean it out. This is good to do before anything else, because it lets you see how much space you have to work with and also makes it easier when working on some of the renovations. Attempting to insulate your garage while moving around holiday decorations and power tools is difficult to do. When you are emptying out the garage, it is also a good time to decide if this will be a multi-functional space, or entirely used for your office. If it is a multi-functional space, then perhaps organize items in the garage to all be stored on one side, then have your office on the other side.

Make the Garage More Comfortable

Once the garage is emptied, it is time to work on some of the renovations. One thing you need to do in order to use a garage as an office space is make it more comfortable. This means sealing and insulating the space. A garage is much too cold and drafty to be in all day while you are working from home. You need to seal around doors and windows and add some insulation to the walls of the garage. A contractor can help you with this if you are not accustomed to dealing with insulation.

Install Ductwork For Heating and Cooling

Don't forget that insulation isn't enough to keep your garage comfortable year-round. You also want to have access to heating and cooling in this space, but mostly focus on heat since garages tend to be cold. If you have an HVAC system in your home, a contractor should be able to extend the ducts out to the garage and install vents.

Get a New Garage Door

This is needed if you intend to still have a large garage door, such as if you are going to use the garage as a multi-functional space. However, when you are spending a good deal of time in your garage, you want it to be safe and secure. This often means upgrading to a newer garage door that is in good condition and made of materials that are not easy to break into. Choosing one made of steel or fiberglass is typically a good idea. Also consider an electronic keypad for entrance to increase the security even more. For more ideas, contact a company like Dorsey Garage Doors.
