Keeping Your Carpets Clean The Green Way

Justin Ross

Your carpet can be one of the dirtiest things in your home. When it comes to cleaning it, there are tons of products available at your local grocery store that will get the job done. The problem with these products is that they contain harmful chemicals. If you have kids or pets, they are likely to be affected by exposure to these chemicals as they are rolling and crawling around on the carpet. In order to protect them from harmful chemicals, using common household items can get your carpets clean.

Spot Removers

Whether you have spilled a glass of wine on your carpets or the dogs dragged in something from outside, there are times when you need something quick to handle a spot on your carpets. For a great spot cleaning solution that does not contain harmful chemicals, you just need vinegar and baking soda. You will want to form a paste that consists of 1 tablespoon of vinegar and 2 tablespoons of baking soda. For a fresh smell, you can add a few drops of lemon essential oil. Using a toothbrush, you want to work the paste into the stain and let it sit for about 20 minutes. Then you can vacuum up any remnants.

Cleaning Your Steam Cleaner

Steam cleaners are a great way to get up pesky spots and give your carpets a deep cleaning. Over time, you may start to notice your steam cleaner smelling pretty gross. It is important that you keep it clean to avoid the smell and getting more dirt on the carpets. In order to clean out the machine, you want to fill it up with equal parts of water and vinegar. Again, for a fresh smell and natural cleaning additive, you can put 1 to 2 drops of lemon essential oil into the machine. Lemon is a natural deodorizer and cleaner so you get the benefits of a cleaning agent without the harmful chemicals.

Benefits of Lemon Essential Oil

Lemon is a great cleaning agent for almost anything in your home. When you go to purchase the oil, you want to make sure it is pure. The last thing you want to do is buy a product you think is all-natural, only to find out it has chemicals added into it. There are several companies that offer certified pure lemon oil. The great thing about this particular oil is that it is antiviral, antifungal, and antiseptic. Not only is it great for your health, but the smell is much better than cleaning agents you can find at the store.
